The monks of St. Bede Abbey chose a new abbot. Rev. Michael Calhoun is the ninth Abbot of St. Bede Abbey. Abbot comes from the Aramaic word abba for father. He’s the head of the group of monks like the father is the head of a family in many traditions. It’s not necessarily a powerful, authoritative role. Many abbots use the role to care for the other monks in the monastery and demonstrate how to be a good monk or priest.
