An appellate judge on the court in Ottawa died last week. Daniel Schmidt had been on the Third District court since 2002. Illinois Supreme Court Justice Robert Carter says he was saddened by Schmidt’s death from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. He says Schmidt received high marks from lawyers who went before him.

Grundy County Judge Lance Peterson will replace Schmidt on the appellate court on August 1st. Peterson was a state’s attorney and served as a judicial clerk for an appellate judge and an Illinois Supreme Court justice. Peterson says he was honored and humbled by the appointment, and his thoughts and prayers are with Schmidt’s family.
