Local election results analysis: LaSalle County mostly went with statewide preferences

Like Democrats statewide, LaSalle County Democrats prefer Alexi Giannoulias to run for Secretary of State. The election statistics from the County Clerk’s Office show Republicans preferred Peggy Hubbard to run for Senate, with statewide winner Kathy Salvi in a close second locally.

The county’s Republicans strongly preferred the Darren Bailey and Stephanie Trussel governor and lieutenant governor ticket, which won statewide. They also went more for Thomas DeVore for Attorney General and strongly chose Dan Brady for the Secretary of State nomination, like Republican voters statewide. Jim Marter was the Congressional candidate who appealed most to the party’s voters in the 14th district, but Scott Gryder won district-wide after finishing third in LaSalle County.

In the close race between Republicans Brett Nicklaus and Win Stoller in the Illinois Senate 37th District primary, Nicklaus carried the LaSalle County part of the district. But Stoller is the winner district-wide. In the 74th Illinois House district, the county’s Republicans went for district winner Bradley Fritts. Those in the 75th went for district winner Jed Davis over incumbent David Welter. And Republican Dennis Tipsword carried the LaSalle County part of the 105th district, which he won.

In this primary, more than twice as many of the 13,625 voters asked for Republican ballots than Democratic ballots. The 2014 and 2022 elections were similar in how many more Republicans than Democrats voted, but the 2018 primary had more Democrats. There were 91 non-partisan ballots in districts with referenda where voters could choose to vote only on the referenda. Overall turnout was 19%.
