The village of Sheridan is 150 years old and will celebrate the anniversary over the Independence Day weekend. Sheridan Historical Society President and Founder Sandy Vahl says a time capsule started for the 100th anniversary has been opened. People can see its contents.

It was loaded with pictures and also contained a flag from the village’s 125th anniversary in 1997. Vahl says the historical society is collecting contributions that will go into the time capsule to be opened in 50 more years.

Vahl says if not for a railroad company laying tracks in the area in 1871, Sheridan might not have become a village in 1872. There was no easy road through the area. But it quickly became a place where grain elevator companies could ship product via train.

There are numerous events scheduled in Sheridan, some for Independence Day and some for the sesquicentennial, through Monday the 4th. You can find a schedule in the village’s newsletter.
