Serena area residents could end sanitary district in primary election

A referendum on the ballot in the Serena Township will ask if about ninety residents if they want to dissolve a sanitary district. Attorney Jack Cantlin says the district was formed because the Environmental Protection Agency said it had to be. He says although it was formed, the EPA never installed a sewer system in township.

Cantlin says it would cost too much now for the township to do it. District trustees went to the voters and collected signatures so voters could choose whether to dissolve the district in the primary. He says if voters decide to dissolve the district, the money that is left will go to the Serena Unit School District.

Although district trustees did vote to uses some of the money for projects that help drain water away from the schools. Voters can ask for a non-partisan ballot for the June 28th election if they want to vote solely on this issue.
