Drowning and carbon monoxide among boating dangers, warns Corps of Engineers

With sensitivity for those affected by the boat fire that happened in Seneca on Saturday, we want readers to understand that this story was already written and scheduled for Sunday morning. We post it here hoping that everyone may learn about multiple aspects of boating safety.

Most boaters don’t have to wear life jackets, but it’s a good idea. Illinois Waterway Visitors Center Park Ranger Julie McDonald says kids under age 13 must, but if they take cues from adults who don’t, they become adults who don’t.

Boaters should be aware of everything going around them at all times. There’s a potentially deadly phenomenon called “boater’s hypnosis”. A relaxing effect of the sun, wind, noise, vibrations, and movements experienced during boating lull the mind into slow reactions.

There’s also a warning about carbon monoxide. Any boat motor that burns gasoline produces it, and it can accumulate around the boat. People on the boat, people swimming near it, and even people on a nearby boat can be affected by it.
