“Pretty cool” to be a woman president of IHSA for Title IX 50th anniversary

The Illinois High School Association has been around for almost 120 years. But its board has had just two women serve as its president. Katy Hasson from a school in Taylor Ridge southwest of Moline was just chosen.

It’s noteworthy that she’ll be the president during the 50th anniversary of the Education Amendments Act. Its Title IX is the basis for requiring a federally funded school with boys sports to also have girls sports and to support them equally. Hasson says to be the IHSA president at this time is “pretty cool”.

While Title IX is mostly associated with school sports now, that was an afterthought. Sports didn’t come up in Congressional hearings on the bill and Title IX doesn’t specifically mention sports.
