The city of Peru is using gambling funds to set up a scholarship for residents. Ten residents could get a $1,000 a year scholarship for two years at Illinois Valley Community College.

Alderman Mike Sapienza, who helped create the scholarship, says it was long overdue. He says it’s a great opportunity to better the city and help students.

He says residents should be able to apply for the scholarship starting in the fall 2022 semester. But he says for the upcoming semester, only five applications will be accepted.
