New law means county will pay less while sheriff is paid more

The sheriff will get a big raise in December, and the county will save a lot of money paying him. A new state law says the sheriff must be paid at least 80% of what the state’s attorney makes. And it says the state will pay two-thirds of the salary. So the job that currently pays about $88,000 per year in LaSalle County will pay around $146,000 starting in December, but the county has to come up with less than $49,000 for it.

County Board Chairman Don Jensen says Gov. Pritzker signed that law last month just days after the County Board set a salary range of $88,578 to $95,389 for the sheriff for December 2022 to November 2026. The board rescinded that resolution yesterday and approved a new one to comply with the new law.
