Ten license plate reading cameras are being installed in Grundy County. Sheriff Ken Briley says the department will install them in the three phases starting on the east side.

The department is working with Flock Safety, a company that works with 150 other departments in the state that provides the cameras. VP of External Communications Josh Thomas explains what the cameras do. He says a picture will be taken of the license plate and run through a criminal database.

He says the cameras do not use face recognition technology. And he says if the plate doesn’t come back with anything, the picture is permanently deleted.

Sheriff Briley also says that the cameras are a great tool for helping in a missing person’s case. He did not say specifically where the cameras will be placed because he doesn’t want people to destroy them.
