(Danville, IL) — The Illinois House is advancing a bill named after Jelani Day. The Illinois State University grad student was reported missing last August before his body was found two weeks later in the Illinois River in LaSalle County. The FBI is still investigating his death, which was ruled a drowning. The House Judiciary-Criminal Committee yesterday passed the measure, which would require a coroner or medical examiner to notify the FBI when human remains are not identified within 72 hours of discovery. The bill now heads to the House floor for consideration.
