Two Ottawa police officer who will retire in the next two years won’t get the pension sweetener they hoped for. Mayor Dan Aussem says a court has ruled it illegal. They were supposed to get 6% per year raises in the last three years on the job.

To keep things legal, the city and the police union have agreed to the regular raises of 3% plus 1% more for the last two years. The final pay is used to calculate a retired officer’s pension. In some cities, a retiring officer has gotten a pay boost of 20% for just the last paycheck or two and qualified for many years of a higher pension at a rate he hardly paid into.
