The United Way of Eastern LaSalle County has a deadline of next Thursday to hear from organizations and government units asking for emergency food and shelter money. The United Way chapter has about $190,000 to distribute. Director Shelli Ocepek (oh-SEP-ik) says the funds can be for food pantries, rent and mortgage payment help, and other services that help with things like that. Qualifying organizations have accounting systems that can be audited. The money is the most the Ottawa-based chapter has ever had to distribute.
