Streator and Ransom residents could get higher water bills next year. Illinois American Water is asking the Illinois Commerce Commission for permission to raise rates. Spokeswoman Karen Cotton says someone billed $50 per month now would be billed around $60 per month, if the proposal is approved. But some people would get lower bills if the ICC also allows a low income discount.
Cotton says the company has invested in the area’s water system and will keep doing it. There’s a new water company office in Streator, the community will get a new water tower, lead service lines are being replaced, and an ultraviolet purification system will be installed.
The ICC will review Illinois American Water’s request and take most of this year to decide. It could approve all or some of what the company’s asking for. New rates would take effect next year.
