Republicans say Illinois Democrats tolerate corruption. St. Rep. Tom Demmer says the special committee he was on didn’t do its job of investigating corruption in 2020. The committee came together after an associate of Michael Madigan was accused of taking bribes for influence with the former House Speaker. After Madigan’s indictment yesterday, Demmer said the committee should have investigated, subpoenaed witnesses, and met more often. But he says the Democrats on the committee stopped that.
Freeport Republican St. Sen. Brian Stewart says it’s unfortunate that Illinois has to wait for federal prosecutors to root out public corruption and the state should have more power to do it.
Dixon Republican St. Rep. David Welter says if the Madigan indictment doesn’t get Democrats to act on ethics reform, nothing will.
Morris Republican St. Sen. Sue Rezin says she hopes her Democratic colleagues choose to take a tougher stance on ethics reforms.
