  •  At the St Bede Class 1A, Midland will face Putnam County.
  • In the Indian Creek Class 1A, Somonauk versus Pecatonica.
  • At the Wilmington Class 2A, Seneca takes on Gridley.
  • In the Rochelle Class 3A, The hosting Hubs will face Sterling

 

At the Hinckley- Big Rock Class 1A Sectional in girls basketball, Serena defeated Newark 49-27 to win their program’s first Sectional Championship. Jenna Setchell led the Lady Huskers with 18 points. For the Lady Norseman, K.J. Friestad had eight points and 14 rebounds in the loss. Serena will face Ridgeview on Monday at the Serena Supersectional.

 

Marquette Academy defeated Seneca at the 7th and 8th grade levels in junior high Volleyball.

The 7th grade team  won in 2 sets. Leading the Lady Knights was Hunter Hopkins with 8 aces, 2 kills and 8 assists. Kelsey Cuchra added 4 aces, 5 digs and 2 kills. 

 

The 8th graders won in 3 sets. Leading the Lady Knights was Kinley Rick with 6 aces 6 kills and 5 digs. Hunter Hopkins added 5 kills 2 aces and led the offense with 10 assists.

 

Elsewhere in sports

 

The Chicago Bulls knocked off the Atlanta Hawks 112-108 at the United Center.  The Bulls extended their winning streak to six straight and now lead Miami by a half-game for the best record in the East.  The Bulls host the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow.

 

The Blackhawks are back in action tonight squaring off with the New Jersey Devils at home.  The Hawks have had some time off after falling to Florida on Sunday for its third consecutive loss.  

 

The 14th-ranked Fighting Illini fell short against 19th-ranked Ohio State 86-83 in Champaign.  The Illini look to bounce back Sunday when they travel to face Michigan in Ann Arbor.

 

Tonight in college hoops, Northwestern visits Penn State.  Tomorrow, Notre Dame hosts Georgia Tech, Southern Illinois visits Drake, Illinois State hosts Indiana State, and Bradley hosts Valparaiso.

 

The Chicago Fire kickoff their season tomorrow at Miami in the MLS.  The Fire will  host Orlando in their home opener on March 5th and looks to bounce back from a disappointing nine-win season last year.

 

Over in NASCAR, The Cup Series rolls into Fontana California for the Auto Club 400.
