The Michigan man accused of shooting at Oglesby Police officers at an Illinois Valley Community College parking lot in 2020 was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Judge H. Chris Ryan says it was because of the mental fitness exams done by two psychiatrists.
Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sticka argued that thirty-six year old Peter Bergsma knew what he was doing when he fled police. Bergsma said to police that the lord told him to run.
Defense Attorney Brad Popurella says Bergsma was wearing women’s clothing when the police knocked on the door of his RV. He will be back in court in February when the judge will likely order mental health treatment.
