Veterans began standing at Memorial Plaza in Washington Square Park for the American Legion 33 Honor Guard Vigil Friday. And while people are observing members take fifteen minute shifts, Event Chairman John Duback says there are some new things happening this year including bag pipers and flute playing.

Flutes for Vets of Central Illinois is a new organization formed in May of 2021 to help veterans with mental health issues.

Director Ken Troyan played the American Woodwind Flute in front of the plaza.

He says the music the flute makes is a very soothing sound.

Troyan says that the organization also works with veteran’s groups in Marshall, Bureau and Putnam Counties.

Here’s just a sample of what he played.
