The Ottawa Fire Department is in the middle of Fire Prevention Month. Fire Prevention Coordinator Kevin Theis says he likes to go to grade schools and cover everything from recognizing the smoke alarm sound to getting out of the house. He’ll take a smoke alarm so the kids can hear it. And he’ll cover knowing a way out and having a meeting place.
This year, the kids won’t get any practice inside the trailer made to look like a miniature house that fills with artificial smoke. Theis says it’s too small to work well with COVID-19 protocols. But he hopes to get it out next year.
