LaSalle County Health Department Educator Jennie Barrie says that bats are still the most common animal that can give rabies to humans.
Barrie says there are steps you can take if you think you’ve been exposed.
She says if a person finds a bat in a room in the house, do not release it because it needs to be properly caught and tested in a lab.
For the first time in many years a Lake County man died from rabies after a bat bit him.
Barrie says that it’s important to vaccinate your pets for the disease.
She also says don’t try and take in wild animals.
