The American League outscored the National League 5-2 in the 91st All-Star Game at Coors Field. White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn tossed one scoreless inning and South Side closer Liam Hendriks locked down the save for the AL. White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, but didn’t record an at-bat. Also, Sox starter Carlos Rodon didn’t make an appearance. For the Cubs, Kris Bryant went 0-for-2 and closer Craig Kimbrel allowed one hit and no runs in two-thirds of an inning. The Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado went 0-for-2 at the plate for the NL and St. Louis closer Alex Reyes tossed a scoreless two-thirds of an inning.
Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was named the MVP after homering and batting two runs in for the American League. Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani earned the win, pitching a spotless opening inning.
Some of the newer rules in Major League Baseball might not stick around next season. In a press conference on Tuesday, Commissioner Rob Manfred said seven-inning doubleheaders and playing extra innings with a runner on second base probably won’t continue into 2022 and that those rules were only installed due to COVID-19. Manfred also mentioned how the league could look into banning the shift, something that is being experimented in Double-A ball.
The Bucks and Suns are set for Game Four of the NBA Finals in Milwaukee tonight. Giannis Antetokounmpo will look to keep his dominant reign rolling following back-to-back 40-plus point and 10-plus rebound games. He is the first to accomplish the feat since Shaquille O’Neal. His performance paved the way for a 120-100 win at home in Game Three this past Sunday. Devin Booker will look to help the Suns bounce back. Phoenix still leads the series 2-1.
The United States Men’s Olympic basketball team is finally in the win column. Team USA defeated Argentina 108-80 on Tuesday in Las Vegas in its preparation for the Olympics in Tokyo this month. The Americans will take on Australia on Friday.
The WNBA All-Star Game is tonight in Las Vegas. There’s a twist to this year’s game as the WNBA All-Stars will battle the U.S. Women’s National Team. The 1996 gold-medal U.S. Women’s Olympic Team will also be honored during the game.
One of the most successful tennis players of all time won’t compete in the upcoming Olympic Games. Roger Federer announced on Twitter he’s withdrawing from the Games that begin later this month. He blamed a “setback” with his knee following two surgeries on his right knee. The Swiss superstar said the issue happened during the recent grass court season.
Multiple Wimbledon matches are being investigated for allegedly being fixed. The allegations come after a number of suspicious and very specific bets were placed on matches during the tournament in the earlier rounds. The International Tennis Integrity Agency has not released any information involving the match fixing investigations.
