Before the pandemic hit, Police Chief Doug Bernabei says he was already looking into transitioning out of his position.
He and former Peru Mayor Scott Harl were discussing a timeline to move into an administrative role.
Bernabei says that he’s been in law enforcement for 40 years.
He says he is humbled to be able to hand over the role of police chief to the finest group of supervisors, police officers, and other employees any new officer could ask for.
He also says the crime rate has dropped drastically in the city over the past 15 years which he credits to the member of the Peru Police Department.
