During the Independence Day weekend conservation police will be out patrolling the different waterways keeping an eye out for people boating under the influence.

Conservation Police Sergeant Phil Wire says that police will also be writing tickets for boaters who are also not following safety laws.

Wire says that not wearing a life jacket has been a problem for boaters if they crash.

He says if a boat crashes, a person could be thrown into the water and they could be unconscious and drown if they’re not wearing a life jacket.

Wire says that 18 people drowned last year.

He also says that conservation police will write tickets if there isn’t one life jacket for every person on board.
