Yesterday was a double header on WCMY and the season came to an end for The Marquette Crusader in Baseball and softball at the Super-Sectionals at Wesleyan University.

The Lady Crusaders lost to Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 1-0 in the class 1A super sectional.  Pitcher Kaylee Killelea took the loss after giving up just three hits, no earned runs, three walks with 14 strikeouts.

 

Eight runs allowed in the second inning was too much for the Crusaders in the Class 2A Super Sectional in baseball as Marquette lost to Normal U High 9-2.

The Crusaders finished their standout debut Class 2A season at 17-3.

 

Newark defeated Newman 5-3 in nine innings to win the Class 1A baseball super sectional at Rivets Stadium in Rockford. The Norseman now advance to the state semifinals on Thursday at Illinois State University.

 

Marquette’s Vic Mullen was named to the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette’s 85th All-State Football Team.

 

Elsewhere in sports

Yesterday the Rays hit three home runs in a 5-2 win over the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.  Lance Lynn was tagged with the loss after allowing three-runs over six innings.  Brian Goodwin drove in a run for the South-Siders which snapped their four-game win streak.

 

The Sox left fielder Eloy Jiménez has been medically cleared to resume baseball activities at the team’s complex in Glendale, Arizona.   Jiménez is recovering from a ruptured left pectoral tendon he suffered at the end of Spring Training.  

 

The Cubs snapped their five-game winning streak with a 5-2 loss to the Mets in Queens, New York.  Jake Arrieta dropped to 5-and-7 after giving up four-runs on four hits over five innings.  Anthony Rizzo and Patrick Wisdom hit back to back homers in the seventh for the North-Siders.

 

Tyler O’Neil drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the eighth in the Cardinals 4-2 win over the Marlins at Busch Stadium.  Giovanny Gallegos got the victory in relief for the Cards which ended a three-game losing skid.  

 

Major League Baseball is expected to issue ten-day suspensions to any players caught using foreign substances.  Teams will receive a memo outlining plans to cut down on the use of substances from pitchers in both the National and American Leagues.  The issue stems from the use of SpiderTack, which is a heavy duty glue that has become a go-to tool for pitchers.

 

The Chicago Sky visit the Minnesota Lynx tonight in the WNBA.

 

The Chicago Bears kick off a mandatory full-squad minicamp today.  Practices run through Thursday. After finishing minicamp, the players will be off until the start of training camp July 27th.
