Raymond Gene Detert, 83, of Ottawa, passed away August 8th, 2026.
Mass will be held at St. Columba Church on Friday August 14,2026 at 10:30 a.m. and a second mass will be held at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Tuesday August 18,2026 at 10:30 a.m. Cremation rites have been entrusted to Ottawa Funeral Home.
Ray was born October 1, 1942, in Solon, Iowa, to Lewis and Lula Detert. In his younger years Ray worked in food retail then moved to Ottawa and managed the Eagle grocery store for many years. He also enjoyed working on houses and rentals and operating Detes Construction with his son Dustin.
Ray was a member of St. Brigid Parish and a past member of the Ottawa Lions Club.
Ray enjoyed family get togethers and cooking. He loved to tinker around with old trucks and tractors.
He is survived by his sister Mabel Pata; his daughter Deb (Dorothy) Detert; his sons David Detert, Dustin (Chris) Detert, and Darrin (Mandy) Detert. His grandchildren Alysha (Lucas), Justin (Savanna) and Aaron (Addie) Detert, his extended grandchildren Bre Donahue, Bethany Navarro, Brooke Dovin and Brittany Dovin. Also, his great grandchildren Lucas and Luna Rice, and 5 extended great grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous loved relatives, mainly from lowa, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Also surviving is Jean Detert, mother of his 4 children. Also, Susan Woodrum, companion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Leo, and sister Betty.
Ray will be dearly missed by all. In his words, “We are all Family”
