Exelon Generation is being offered $70 million per year in incentives to keep running the Dresden and Byron nuclear power plants. That’s a lot less than the company CEO says would be on par with what New Jersey offered to keep running nuclear power plants there. CEO Chris Crane says based on the kilowatt hours produced there, Illinois would have to offer $353 million. Since 2016, the state provides $235 million for running the Cordova and Clinton power plants. In an era of low electric prices, the company has said keeping some nuclear power plants running requires subsidies to compete with other subsidized power generators, including solar companies.
