Howard Glenn Spicer, 79, of Marseilles, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at his home.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 4 at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 5 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery at a later date.

Howard was born on October 23, 1946, in Ottawa, IL, to John Howard and Edith Louise (Moe) Spicer. In 1969, he married Dayle Olsen of Marseilles (in a double wedding) who survives.

Howard was an owner and operator of Spicer Gravel Company until his retirement. Howard was a member of the Marseilles Fire Department, from August 4, 1975 until May 30, 2022, and a member of the Marseilles United Methodist Church. He was active in the community and especially with the Marseilles Fire Department where he served as Chief Engineer. Howard was best known for his knowledge on how to fix anything no matter the size, which is where he got the nickname “Doc”. He was always noticeable around town in his west coaster scooter.

He is survived by his wife, Dayle; his daughter, Sherri J. (Danny) Mathews of Marseilles; his son, Philip G. (Terrie Rayburn) Spicer of Marseilles; four grandchildren, Joseph (Bryanna) and Anna Mathews, and Madison and Tate Spicer; one great-granddaughter, Leslie; and many nieces and nephews.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents, John H. Spicer (1987) and Edith L. Spicer (2007); his brother, Martin Spicer (2007); and his sister, Florann Spicer (1936).

Memorials may be directed to the Marseilles United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers will be Dan and Joseph Mathews, Tate Spicer, Gerald Stevenson, George Rieuf, and Brian Thomas.
