A child is safe after he and his mother went missing in Grundy County. The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office says deputies attempted to serve orders Wednesday to Emily Johnson on West Southmor Road in unincorporated Morris that state her three-month-old infant, Silas Iennarella, was to be turned over to the custody of his father in Yorkville. Deputies responded to the address on West Southmor Road but learned that Emily and Silas no longer lived there. The child’s father later reported that he was receiving text messages from Emily that were suicidal in nature.  A search was conducted on Emily’s cell phone that showed her in the city of Aurora.  Later, authorities reported that Grundy County Detectives had located Silas and that he would be turned over to the father. There is no word on the location of the mother.

Since the Illinois State Police (ISP) began inspecting Federal Firearms License (FFL) dealers, firearm thefts from dealers in Illinois have plummeted—down nearly 80% in 2024 compared to 2023 and 92% compared to 2022. Governor JB Pritzker praised the impact of the Firearm Dealer License Certification Act, stating, “State oversight works. These measures are keeping guns out of the wrong hands and reducing gun violence.” Enforced in 2019, the Act required FFL dealers to implement video security systems, with ISP inspections beginning in 2022. ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly noted that these efforts are effectively curbing gun thefts and preventing crime. This progress aligns with a 31% statewide drop in shootings from 2023 to 2024, reflecting ISP’s dedication to community safety.

Closing arguments continue in Michael Madigan’s landmark corruption trial. Prosecutors laid out two bribery schemes believed to have involved ComEd and AT&T Illinois. They also discussed two schemes involving the former Illinois House Speaker’s private law firm and former Chicago Alderman Danny Solis. It isn’t known when Madigan’s attorneys will begin their closing argument. Jury deliberations are expected to begin next week. In related news, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has called for the forfeiture of former House Speaker Mike Madigan’s Chief of Staff Tim Mapes’ state pension following his conviction. Raoul stated, “Anyone convicted of violating the public trust should lose their taxpayer-funded pension.” Mapes’ last payment, over $154,000 annually, was issued in February 2024 before being halted after his sentencing. The State Employees’ Retirement System (SERS) Executive Board will decide whether to revoke the pension. “If the recommendation reaches the SERS board, I will absolutely vote to end it,” Raoul affirmed.

A Seattle U.S. District Judge heard arguments today in a lawsuit filed by Arizona, Illinois, Oregon, and Washington. Trump signed the executive order Monday after being sworn back into office. President Donald Trump’s administration is now putting pressure on sanctuary cities like Chicago to cooperate with ICE agents tasked with making mass deportations. The Department of Justice released a memo yesterday requiring state and local leaders to comply with enforcement or face potential prosecution. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul says the Constitution forbids such action. Meanwhile, pushback is growing in Chicago’s immigration community with the news that churches and schools are no longer off limits to ICE agents.

Affected taxpayers now have until October 15th, 2025, to file various state individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. The same relief will be available to any other counties added later to the disaster area by FEMA.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is clarifying the role of law enforcement agencies in the state and the enforcement of federal immigration laws. Raoul says civil immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government, adding that state law doesn’t grant local law enforcement the authority to enforce federal civil immigration laws. That includes participating, supporting, or assisting in any capacity with federal immigration enforcement operations unless federal agents have a criminal warrant or federal law specifically requires it.

Tuition is going up for certain incoming freshmen at University of Illinois schools. The Board of Trustees voted yesterday to increase the base tuition rate for Illinois-resident undergraduates enrolling in the fall of this year by two-point-two-percent at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Illinois Chicago, and two percent at the University of Illinois Springfield. Officials say the tuition hikes will help the universities meet rising costs driven by inflation. The increases follow tuition freezes in seven of the past 10 years.

The true identity of a man charged in an Urbana hit and run that killed two Chicago area women is being revealed. Police say amended charges were filed in Champaign County for the suspect after authorities learned that Juan JaHaziel Saenz-Suarez was an alias. He has now been identified as Julio Cucul Bol, a 29-year-old citizen of Guatemala. Authorities say the suspect is the driver who ran after slamming an SUV into a Honda Civic this past Sunday at the intersection of University and Coler avenues. Bol was arrested Wednesday in Texas while riding a bus heading to Mexico. He faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash, aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death, and reckless homicide.

Joseph P. Pawelczyk, 45, is charged with two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony carrying up to three years in prison. Prosecutors argue he fired a gun into a fire pit, while Pawelczyk claims he threw a firecracker as a prank. The incident occurred on June 22, prompting two visits from La Salle County sheriff’s deputies. Witnesses allege Pawelczyk discharged a handgun, though their testimonies have discrepancies. Pawelczyk denies the claim, saying his revolver was secured and attributing the noise to firecrackers purchased in Indiana. The trial has been delayed until Jan. 30, as prosecutors wait for a rebuttal witness. The defense has highlighted inconsistent witness accounts and the absence of gunpowder residue testing. A verdict is expected after closing arguments.
