A fire that broke out in South Ottawa Sunday afternoon just before 2:30 has been determined accidental, according to the Ottawa Fire Department. The blaze at 118 East Van Buren Street began in the downstairs kitchen when food and a wooden cutting board left on the stove were ignited. Officials say the family’s dog inadvertently turned on the stove while attempting to reach the food, sparking the fire. The family was not home at the time of the incident. One civilian, who had entered the burning home in an attempt to rescue the family’s dog, was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and transported to the hospital by a family member. Firefighters found the dog in an upstairs closet, safely rescued it, and returned it to the family waiting outside. The dog was unharmed and reunited with its family. One firefighter was also treated on scene for a minor illness due to over-exertion but did not require any additional medical treatment.

No injuries were reported, but the apartment sustained moderate fire and smoke damage. The displaced residents are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is still under investigation. Nine firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, with support from other local agencies.

Streator Police have detained a person of interest after a report of gunfire late Sunday night. The incident took place around 11:30 p.m. on the 200 block of East Grove Street. A motorist repeatedly screeched their tires, which caught the attention of nearby residents and led to an altercation. According to the police, the individuals in the vehicle fired multiple shots at a residence on East Grove Street. The residents then chased the suspect vehicle, resulting in more gunfire as shots were fired at the pursuing vehicle. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the gunfire. The person of interest was taken into custody at 12:43 a.m. Monday and the investigation is ongoing. Police have mentioned that charges are pending but have not been filed as of 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
