The LaSalle County Health Department reports mosquitoes collected late last week in Marseilles have tested positive for the West Nile virus. This is the second confirmed case of West Nile virus activity in La Salle County this year. The first was in May when a robin collected in Somonauk tested positive for the virus. The virus is obtained by mosquitoes when they feed on infected birds like crows, bluejays, and robins. If you notice any of these birds appearing sick or dying, please contact the health department. Mosquitoes are capable of transmitting the virus to humans. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headaches, and muscle aches. It’s important to note that four out of five people infected won’t show any symptoms at all.
