LaSalle County CASA Marks National Child Awareness Month

By WCMY News Sep 3, 2024 | 3:42 AM

As National Child Awareness Month (NCAM) unfolds this September, LaSalle County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is amplifying its efforts to focus attention on one of the nation’s most pressing issues—child welfare. NCAM, recognized every September, serves as a critical reminder to communities across the country to prioritize the well-being of children, our most valuable resource.

A Call to Action: Addressing the Growing Needs

This year, LaSalle County CASA is urging the community to take notice and contribute to its mission by considering volunteer opportunities as CASA advocates and providing much-needed donations. The organization remains steadfast in its commitment to serving the vulnerable children in our community. The reality is staggering: more than 200 children in LaSalle County are currently in need of the vital advocacy that CASA provides. These children, navigating the complexities of the court system, require a dedicated voice to champion their rights and well-being. As this need continues to grow, it is imperative that our community come together to ensure these children are not left without the support they desperately need.

“Every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment,” said Sally Van Cura, Executive Director of LaSalle County CASA. “During National Child Awareness Month, we are reminded of the importance of our mission—to advocate for the best interests of children in our community’s court system, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are met.”

Support Needed Now More Than Ever

LaSalle County CASA’s efforts are more crucial than ever as the organization aims to provide advocacy for every child in need. In 2023, the yearly cost to support each child through the CASA program was approximately $1,500 per child. With over 200 children in LaSalle County that can be assigned by the courts to receive CASA services, the need for advocate volunteers and financial support is urgent.

“We hope that National Child Awareness Month will inspire our community whether by volunteering as a CASA advocate, donating to our cause, or simply helping us spread the word Everyone has a role to play in ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.” added Van Cura
