The Lasalle County Highways Department has announced a road closure on N. 36th Road at the Wallace/Freedom Township Line for a culvert replacement starting Monday, June 17, 2024. The project, located a quarter mile east of County Highway 9 (E. 8th Road), is expected to last one month, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during this period.

LaSalle County Deputies arrested Denise Chavez (20) of Joliet on Sunday at 5:43 am. The deputies conducted a traffic stop at the I-80 eastbound Utica TWP entrance ramp and IL RT 178 where Chavez, was arrested for DUI alcohol. She was transported to LASCO Jail, issued additional citations for; Illegal transportation of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol over .08, and later released with a notice to appear.

Planned Parenthood of Illinois is still serving a record number of out-of-state abortion patients since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. The organization says out-of-state patients make up nearly a quarter of its overall abortion patients. Patients from 41 different states have been traveling to Illinois to receive abortion care, with the largest volume coming from Wisconsin and Indiana.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking for volunteer citizen scientists to assist with wild turkey brood surveys to aid biologists in monitoring turkey population trends and reproductive success. Participants are asked to report young turkeys, adult females, and adult males with every observation, as well as the county and date of the observation during the months of June, July, and August. The best way to submit turkey sightings is through the department’s electronic wild turkey survey online. The survey can be accessed on both personal computers and mobile devices through any internet browser or the Survey123 app.

United Airlines customers will soon see ads specifically targeted to them on the seat-back screen. The airline announced that it’s selling ads using customer data, creating personalized advertising. The Chicago-based carrier has ad deals with brands that Norwegian Cruise Line, Macy’s, and Chase. You can opt-out by filling out a form on the United website.

A new survey is comparing more than 180 cities to rank the best places for a staycation this summer. WalletHub found eighty-two percent of Americans plan to travel over the next couple of months with high costs forcing many to cut back and take a less extravagant trip. To determine the best places for wallet-friendly staycation it looked at everything from parks and museums per capita to restaurant costs. The top ten best cities for a staycation include Orlando, Honolulu, Cincinnati, Las Vegas, Tampa, Chicago, San Diego, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Tucson, Arizona.

The trial of former Illinois basketball star Terrence Shannon Junior continues today in Douglas County Kansas. The Chicago native is on trial on rape and sexual aggravated battery charges accusing him of sexually assaulting a woman while attending a football game last September in Lawrence, Kansas. His accuser took the witness stand yesterday, telling jurors she was “terrified” as Shannon assaulted her at a crowded bar near the University of Kansas campus. Shannon’s defense attorney argued police failed to interview possible witnesses and an alternative suspect who had been accused of a similar crime two weeks earlier at the same bar.

Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos is calling a deadly officer-involved shooting in Chillicothe earlier this year justified. Officials say Marvin Martin the third was pulled over in February for driving a reported stolen vehicle. Martin fired several shots at the officer, who returned fire, killing him. Hoos says the officer’s actions were reasonable and necessary to protect himself and the community.

A 13-year-old is wounded following a shooting in Peoria. Police say the victim was found shot Monday night in the 24-hundred block of North Missouri. The victim was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No arrests have been made

Kenneth W. Damron, 69, of Marseilles, went home to the Lord on June 4th. A memorial service for Kenneth W. Damron will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 15th, at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa. Burial for Kenneth W. Damron will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation for Kenneth W. Damron will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 15th before the service at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa.

Nancy Sovern Peffley, 90, of Ottawa, passed away on Wednesday, June 5th. A memorial service for Nancy Peffley will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in July. White Sox Lose To Mariners
The Chicago White Sox surrendered two runs in the bottom of the seventh during a 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. The Sox led by a run entering the inning before Cal Raleigh laced a two-run double off of John Brebbia. Brebbia was charged with his fourth loss in relief, while Andrew Vaughn and Paul DeJong each homered in the losing effort. The Southsiders remain in last place in the AL Central at 17-and-51. Chicago sends Jonathan Cannon to the mound against the M’s tonight.

Cubs Get Walked-Off by the Rays
The Chicago Cubs gave up four runs in the bottom of the ninth during a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. The Cubs led 2-1 entering the inning, but Jose Caballero drove in the game-tying run with a single before Brandon Lowe launched a three-run walk-off home run off of Hector Neris, who was charged with his first loss in relief. Christopher Morel hit his 13th home run during the losing effort. The Northsiders are in third place in the NL Central at 32-and-35. Javier Assad starts for Chicago against Tampa Bay tonight.

Sky Host Connecticut
The Chicago Sky look to get back in the win column when they host the Connecticut Sun at Wintrust Arena tonight. The Sky have dropped three of their last four after losing to the Atlanta Dream 89-80 last Saturday. Chicago is off to a 4-and-6 start this season. Tonight’s contest gets underway at 7:00 PM.

Bears President Still Focused On Building New Stadium In Chicago
Chicago Bears President Kevin Warren is still focused on the team’s plan to build a new stadium along the city’s lakefront. While speaking yesterday at the Union Club of Chicago, Warren said he strongly believes the city needs a new stadium.

The nearly five-billion-dollar project needs billions of dollars in public assistance, but it floundered during the Illinois General Assembly’s spring session. Warren said the team isn’t considering selling a minority stake in the team to help pay for a stadium.
