A proposed state bill on wind turbines could make it easier for companies to place them where they want but harder for people to keep turbines from going in right next door. St. Sen. Chapin Rose says it’s bad policy. He believes local governments would have no ability to say where wind turbines may or may not be. Rose says he fought for them to have a say more than a decade ago.
So far, where to put a wind turbine in Illinois is mostly a local matter with rules that can require wind power companies to negotiate with neighboring land owners. The bill Rose is worried about says local governments can regulate wind tower placement, but not more strictly than the state does. The bill is SB1602.
