Two people were killed last night, their daughter wounded, and their former son-in-law arrested this morning in LaSalle County. Sheriff Tom Templeton says a woman who lives in Sheridan reported a man pounding on her door trying to get in. Then her windows were shot out.

The woman tried to call her parents, but she got no answer. One of their neighbors saw 62-year old Brenda J. Barnes inside on the floor bleeding. Paramedics got in and found that Brenda and 62-year old Gregory S. Barnes, Sr. had been fatally shot.

Sheridan area residents were put on alert to keep their doors and windows locked and not to open their doors to strangers while the hunt was on for the suspect. Thirty-seven year old Donald A. Fredres of Sandwich was arrested in a field north of Sheridan Correctional Center at about 6:45am today.

Templeton says the handgun used in the killings hadn’t been found as of a news conference this morning. State’s Attorney Todd Martin expected to file charges later today. Police believe no one else was involved in the crime and the alert for Sheridan has been cancelled.
