Cellular Outages Hit Thousands Nationwide

By WCMY News Feb 22, 2024 | 6:31 AM
  • Updated – Thousands of people across the country are being impacted by cell phone outages. AT&T said some of its customers are experiencing interruption and are encouraging the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored. Outages have been reported in major cities such as Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. T-Mobile and Verizon customers have also reported issues, but the carriers have said their networks are operating normally and did not experience outages. Some emergency departments have said 911 centers are still operational but warned residents they may have issues trying to call 911. Some iPhone users are reporting their phones are stuck in SOS mode due to the outage. iPhones enter SOS mode when a cellular connection is lost, which allows users to still make SOS texts or calls to emergency services on iPhone 13 models and up.

**Updated: AT&T is apologizing for a massive outage that’s affecting customers across the country but they’re not saying why it happened. In a statement, they say that they’re working “urgently” to fix the problem. In the meantime, the carrier urges customers to use Wi-Fi calling until service is restored. So far, there is no indication that a cyber-attack was the cause of the outage.
