Sports competitions are getting most of the attention, but the Illinois High School Association is having a chess tournament this week. Coach Eric Czerwin with the Illinois Chess Coaches Association says the online chess game platform LiChess lets students play without risk of transmitting the coronavirus. It’s free but not made for team tournaments, so he’s putting the match records on Google Sheets.

The virtual state chess series is Friday and Saturday. Some of the nearest schools in it are Oswego and Joliet West. The IHSA has had chess tournaments since 1975.
