Ottawa Fire Department Praises Impact of Sprinkler System in Apartment Fire

February 7th, 2024 – At 8:34 a.m. this morning, the Ottawa Fire Department swiftly responded to a distress call reporting an apartment fire with an individual still inside. Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found that a second-floor apartment in the downtown building located at 601 LaSalle St had a room and content fire.

However, due to the recent installation of a sprinkler system in the apartment, the fire had already been effectively extinguished upon the arrival of emergency crews. This life-saving intervention not only prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent units but also ensured the safety of the residents within.

The resident of the apartment was still inside when fire crews made entry. Despite sustaining minor injuries, she was assisted out of the apartment, received prompt medical attention, and was transported to OSF St. Elizabeth Hospital for further care.

The importance of the sprinkler system in preventing a more severe incident cannot be overstated. It unquestionably prevented a potential tragedy, ensuring the safety of both the apartment and its occupant.

Following control of the incident, salvage operations were initiated to minimize additional damage to the property. Fortunately, the fire’s accidental origin, attributed to bedding material ignited by a nearby candle, did not result in further injuries to building occupants or firefighters.

The Ottawa Fire Department extends its gratitude to the Ottawa Police Department and Ottawa Water Department for their invaluable support during this operation
