The two Oglesby police officers involved in the shooting Tuesday night are on administrative leave. That’s a normal development after such an incident and isn’t indicative of any wrongdoing on their part. Police Chief Doug Hayse spoke about it at a news conference yesterday.
Charges against 35-year old Peter D. Bergsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan are aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a stolen vehicle. He’s the man who allegedly suddenly shot at the officers while they were talking to him about the RV he parked in the Illinois Valley Community College parking lot. The police weren’t hurt; Bergsma got a graze wound to the head when they shot back.
UPDATE THURSDAY AFTERNOON: Judge H. Chris Ryan set bond today at $1 million and set a January 14 hearing for Bergsma to hear the charges that a grand jury approves. Bergsma intends to hire a private attorney.
