National Guard members are at the Illinois veterans home in LaSalle. LaSalle County Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent Steven Kreitzer says a medical unit is there to keep records of temperature checks and coronavirus tests. It will also make sure personal protective equipment is being worn properly. Kreitzer says the help means the nurses who work there can focus on other things they need to do to take care of the veterans living in the home.
The state is investigating what went wrong since the end of October. In the time since, a coronavirus outbreak at the home has claimed 32 veterans’ lives with more than 100 residents and more than 90 employees contracting the virus.
