Gov. Pritzker blames billionaires for campaigning against the graduated income tax proposal. He was pushing for it as a way to raise more tax money from people who can afford to pay more to fund state services.
Pritzker’s plan itself wasn’t on the ballot. What voters turned down was a constitutional amendment that would have allowed Pritzker’s plan or another plan to become law.
Opponents claimed it would give the legislature more power to tax and they said the state needs to better control spending. The supporters say the legislature may now have to tax more to cover costs.
