On Saturday, Heritage Harbor held its 6th annual 5k park run. At promptly 9:00 am two dozen enthusiastic runners gathered at the central harbor. The waterfront resort started the day with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem for Veterans Day. It had perfect weather and an international feel as well with guests on hand from Canada and South Africa. Parkrun is a global movement organized back in England to promote fitness and an active healthy lifestyle.

Jacob Valley, the resort community director said the park run started at Heritage Harbor in 2017. A walk and or run happens every Saturday and this week marked the first time it took place on a fully paved harbor walk from start to finish. Parkrun is open to not just the heritage harbor residents but goes out of its way to be open to all especially Ottawans. Tammy Barry vice president of sales and marketing was on hand and ran. She said that Heritage Harbor lays claim to being the first parkrun in Illinois. She stressed the community bonding aspect of the run as well as fitness. If you’d like to be healthy, The park run is free and happens every week at Heritage Harbor. You can register for free at the “heritage harbor parkrun” Facebook page. Barry said Heritage Harbor is about 30% complete. The resort has already constructed 200 homes, including condos, of an estimated 550 homes.

The Ottawa Memorial Association marked Veterans Day by laying a wreath Saturday morning at the Viet Nam Memorial in Ottawa by the Illinois River. Then they marched up Columbus Street to Washington Square Park where 50 US flags were mounted, 25 on either side of the 20th-century war memorial at the park’s north end.

President Katie Troccoli gave a speech recalling the bravery of the 82nd airborne as they liberated a nazi concentration camp in May of 1945.

The north end of Washington Park was full of onlookers, both veterans and their families.

34-year-old Kelsey Bergseiter of Dixon was charged by Marseilles Police Sunday with DUI. She was taken to LaSalle County jail.

26-year-old Javier Martinez of Marseilles was arrested by Marseilles police Friday for trying to elude them after he was found to be driving on a suspended license. He was released and given a notice to appear.

35-year-old Thomas Gage of Streator left the scene of a one-car accident Sunday at Bloomington and 2nd Street. He was later picked up by police for leaving the scene, driving with no insurance, and failing to reduce speed. He was given a notice to appear.

OBITUARIES:

Lance W, Valle, 66, of Ottawa, passed away peacefully on November 9TH, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 14th at Gladfelter-Roetker Funeral Home. Interment will follow at St. Columba Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Football

After four seasons, Kyle Tutt’s tenure as head football coach at Streator High School appears to be at an end. The school board’s posted agenda for its meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 14th, includes a motion following the closed session entitled: “Resignation: Head Football Coach.” Streator went 2-7 last fall for the second consecutive season, scoring wins in Week 1 over East Peoria 74-29 and in Week 6 over Lisle 54-21. Both East Peoria and Lisle, like Streator, ultimately finished the season with two victories.

Princeton vs Montini football in Class 3A quarterfinals

Montini Catholic defeated Princeton 27-9 in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A football playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at Bryant Field in Princeton. Montini will play Byron in the Class 3A semifinals.

Wilmington 20 vs Seneca 14

Wilmington (11-1) – its only loss of the season coming in Week 1 to Seneca (11-1) – advances to host Maroa-Forsyth at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. In the Class 2A semifinals.

Girls Basketball

The Ottawa Lady Pirates team is coming off a 25-7 season and ninth-year coach Brent Moore is hoping to find the right combinations after losing returning leading scorer and all-state junior guard Marlie Orlandi to a season-ending injury. Orlandi, who averaged 14.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2.6 steals per game as a sophomore and garnered several postseason accolades, including being an Associated Press Class 3A All-State honorable mention selection, suffered a knee injury in the summer and will miss the entire season.

The Seneca Lady Irish first-year girls’ basketball coach Josh Myers hopes to see the Fighting Irish excel in an up-tempo game and build off last season’s 22-10 record and Tri-County Conference regular-season championship.

The Princeton Holiday Tournament gets underway Monday where the host Tigresses, Bureau Valley, Mendota, Putnam County, and Henry will play.

Boys bowling

The Ottawa Pirates boys bowling team posted a score of 4,202 to place seventh at Saturday’s Lee Lohman Invite at the Arcadia Family Inn Center in Geneseo. Aaron Wiltfong led the Pirates with a 201-high game.

Streator placed 10th with a team count of 3,902 – led by a sixth-place individual finish by Anthony Dominic with a 1,047 six-game series and 233 high games. The La Salle-Peru boy’s bowling team racked up 4,344 pins on Saturday to place fourth in Geneseo’s Lee Lohman Invite.

Geneseo won with 5,374 followed by Rock Island (4,868) and Honnonegah (4,387). Hall-Putnam County (3,972) was ninth and St. Bede (3,764) was 11th among the 12 teams.

Mendota 3,428, Dixon 3,270: Alex Holland rolled a 633 series, including a career-high 279 game, to help the Trojans to a victory Thursday in Dixon.

At Westmont: La Salle-Peru co-op freshman Sam Nauman won her heat of the 100-yard backstroke at the IHSA State Meet at the FMC Natatorium on Friday but did not advance to Saturday’s competition.

>>Bulls Cruise Past Pistons

(Chicago, IL) — DeMar DeRozan dropped in 29 points as the Bulls cruised past the Pistons 119-108 in Chicago. Nikola Vucevic posted 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls, who have won two of three to improve to 4-and-6 on the season. Zach LaVine added 19 points and Coby White had 16 in the victory. The Bulls visit the Bucks tonight.

>>Blackhawks Lose To Panthers

(Sunrise, FL) — The Blackhawks gave up a third-period goal during a 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena. The teams traded goals in the first, with Jason Dickinson and Connor Bedard both lighting the lamp for Chicago. After Florida took the lead in the second, Bedard quickly responded with his second goal to tie the game. However, the Blackhawks allowed a goal early in the third and weren’t able to get the equalizer. Chicago remains last in the Central Division with ten points and a 5-8-and-0 record. The Hawks host Tampa on Thursday.

(Lake Forest, IL) — The Bears will spend the week preparing for their first of two games against the Detroit Lions. Chicago visits Detroit on Sunday. The Bears are coming off a 16-13 win over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football. Chicago is in last place in the NFC North at 3-and-7. Sunday’s game will kick off at noon.

>>Illinois Takes Down Indiana In OT

(Champaign, IL) — The Illinois Fighting Illini walked off against Indiana during a 48-45 overtime win at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Illinois trailed by 15 in the first half before fighting back to take the lead in the third. The Illini gave up a game-tying touchdown with 28 seconds left in regulation to force OT. Indiana hit a field goal on the first possession before John Paddock threw a game-winning 21-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Williams to end the game. Paddock passed for 507 yards, four touchdowns, and a pick, while Williams had 200 receiving yards for two scores. Illinois is now 5-and-5 overall. The Illini visit number 22 Iowa on Saturday.

>>Northwestern Beats Wisconsin

(Madison, WI) — The Northwestern Wildcats got off to a hot start during a 24-10 win over Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday. The Wildcats scored 17 second-quarter points to take a 24-3 lead at the break, and they were able to hold off the Badgers the rest of the way. Ben Bryant had two passing touchdowns and a rushing score to go along with 195 passing yards. Northwestern improved to 5-and-5 on the season. The Wildcats host Purdue this Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

>>Illinois Basketball Grinds Out Win Against Oakland

(Champaign, IL) — The Illinois basketball squad survived a scare by beating Oakland 64-53 at State Farm Center on Friday. The Illini trailed by three with under 11 minutes left in regulation before going on a 22-3 run to take control of the contest. Terrence Shannon Jr. led the Illini with 15 points in the victory. The 2-and-0 Illini host number-seven Marquette tomorrow night.

>>Wildcats Basketball Wins Against Dayton

(Evanston, IL) — The Northwestern Wildcats remain undefeated after beating Dayton 71-66 at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Friday. Brooks Barnhizer hit a jumper with eight-and-a-half minutes left to put Northwestern up for good, although the Flyers kept close until the finish. Ryan Langborg had 19 points to lead Northwestern. The 2-and-0 Wildcats welcome Western Michigan tomorrow night.

>>Slow Start Dooms Notre Dame

(South Bend, IN) — Notre Dame wasn’t able to overcome a sluggish start during a 71-61 loss against Western Carolina at Joyce Center on Saturday. The Fighting Irish were outscored 42-29 in the first half and never led during the second half. Carey Booth scored 20 points in the losing effort, while Markus Burton chipped in with 17. The 1-and-1 Irish go up against Auburn on Thursday.

Spoon River 83, IVCC 53: The Eagles managed to pull within 10 points in the second half but ultimately lost the nonconference game Thursday in Canton.

In college basketball action on Friday, UIC beat Little Rock 86-71, and Valparaiso lost to IUPUI 66-56. On Saturday, DePaul fell to Long Beach State 77-73, Bradley took down Utah State 72-66, Illinois State was defeated by Saint Louis 80-71, Loyola crushed Eastern Illinois 89-65, and Northern Illinois earned a 91-78 win against Appalachian State. Chicago State beat Southern Indiana 78-67 yesterday. Tonight, Northern Illinois hosts Illinois Tech.
