The Ottawa City Council didn’t mention much about the Peltier Factory cleanup at their normal council meeting last night. When asked about it after the meeting ended, Mayor Hasty brushed it aside saying the city would tear down a portion of the Peltier site. This would mean the city is automatically going to treat and not remove

the contaminated soil under Peltier at 518 DeLeon Street and request the second of three federal grant options, the 1 point 7 million dollar one.

The city is still not sure if this second plan calls for adding clean soil after capping with cement. More discussion is expected but it’s not known if public input is allowed.

The City of Ottawa Fire Chief Brian Bressner says carbon monoxide Co 2 alarms are a great idea. Ideally, you should have one on every floor. Bressner says a couple of parts per million is not deadly but a sure warning to call the fire department. The Fire Department will come in and find out where exactly the problem area is and direct an HVAC company to look at it. The Ottawa Fire Department is also looking to have at least two paramedics on every rig that goes to a fire.

Chief Bressner was on the Jay Leseure show Tuesday morning on WCMY.

Illinois Senate Deputy Minority Leader Sue Rezin provided a status update on her efforts to end the state’s moratorium on building new nuclear reactors:

“As a result of ongoing negotiations with the support of the Senate President, his team, and other stakeholders, we are in the process of finalizing the language for legislation that I believe will be voted on in the Senate this week.

“The new legislation will have similar language to Senate Bill 2591, which I filed last month. I hope that this new bill will address the concerns of the Governor by including a very specific and intentional definition of what constitutes new nuclear within our state. Furthermore, it will include state-level oversight in addition to the already stringent oversight laid out by the federal government.

“Nuclear energy runs 24/7, 365 days a year, rain or shine. Nuclear is the clean and affordable energy that is necessary to help power Illinois and America’s future. The federal regulatory permitting process takes six to eight years, so we must act quickly to ensure that our state has the opportunity to take advantage of the amazing advancements in new nuclear technology that have occurred over the past couple of decades. The longer we wait to end this moratorium, Illinois falls further behind the rest of the nation.”
