Fire Prevention Month is October 4th through the 10th and it commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
Ottawa Fire Chief Andy Borkowski stress’:

Kitchen safety is this year’s focus. If you are cooking in the kitchen, you need to be in the kitchen. Getting distracted when you have something cooking on the stove top instead of following a few simple steps can lead to disaster.

You should keep the top of the stove clean and any ignitables at least three feet away. Dish towels are a common source of a kitchen fire if they are left too close to the stovetop.

It is also recommended you have a fire extinquisher in your kitchen and not under or above the stove so you easily access it.

Chief Borkowski stress’ a working smoke detector will save lives and every home should have one.
