Archery deer hunting season started yesterday in Illinois.

It will last through January 17 with two important interruptions of November 20th to 22nd and December 3rd through 6th for firearm deer hunting.

Conservation Police Sergeant Laura Petreikis says:

Even if you make a direct hit, a deer can still run well over 100 yards away from the point it is struck. You may find you have to go onto private property to retrieve it. In that case you must again seek the property owner’s permission.

A lot of people leave their hunting tree stands up year round.
You need to check they are secure. Replace any weathered or worn straps and make sure you have a use a safety harness.

Permits, licenses and stamps must all be up to date and on your person.

Always have a buddy with you or advise someone where you will be hunting and when you plan on returning.

Above all, Sergeant Laura stresses, do all that and you will have fun knowing you are in compliance for anything unexpected that comes your way.

Last year during archery season, Illinois hunters killed almost 68,000 deer.
