Truckers operating in Illinois can expect cops to be checking they’re registered

Truckers beware, the state is making sure you’re registered. 38,000 trucks cross through Illinois each year and earlier this month IDOT conducted a 3-day enforcement in the heavily traveled corridor of I-80 near Rock Island.  They were looking for, you guessed it, a Unified Carrier Registration all trucks should have in their glove compartment.

It’s all because if you’re in violation of anything in the UCR you are more likely to be involved in crashes. So says the Illinois Commerce Commission.

“An unregistered truck is an unsafe one,” said ICC Police Commander Ryan Nance. “Keeping trucking companies up to date on their registration is a key component of the ICC’s trucking enforcement efforts and an essential part of keeping Illinois’ highways safe for all who travel on them.”

In October, ICC police conducted 60 stops and issued 43 citations for various violations, including operating without authority, equipment violations, overweight vehicles, and improper driver credentials. Additionally, the Illinois Secretary of State required 10 unlicensed trucks to complete registrations on the spot, after they were found to be operating without the proper Illinois registrations. Similar ICC Police enforcements have not yet taken place in LaSalle County so you can expect they’re coming. All trucks that pass through Illinois must register for the federal UCR system before Jan. 1, 2024.
