Westbound Interstate 80 west of Ottawa was closed Friday for about five-and-a-half hours after a fiery crash that claimed two lives. At least two vehicles burned up. Illinois State Police also closed the eastbound lanes, but briefly after the crash.
The crash happened about 9am a little northeast of where E. 13th Rd. meets N. 30th Rd. alongside Interstate 80. Eastbound traffic was moving again during the 10am hour. Westbound traffic was stopped until around 2:30pm.
Witnesses say a medical helicopter was called to the scene and flew a patient away. A news release from LaSalle County Coroner William Wujek says a man and a woman died in the crash. Their names will be made available after their families are notified.
