Ottawa Electrical Exam Registration Now Open

Electricians can now register for Ottawa’s November 3rd Electrical Exam through Friday, Nov. 23rd, by calling 814-433-0161, extension 224. There are NO online registrations for this exam. Illinois Valley Community College (IVC) will administer the exam from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Ottawa Center, 321 W. Main St. Testing will end at 4:30 p.m.

The exam categories are Residential Only, Commercial/Industrial Only, and Master (residential, commercial, and industrial). The 100-question test is based on the National Electric Code (NEC) book. Tabbed code books and pencils will be provided, but no electronic devices, notes, calculators, or other materials are allowed during the exam. No tests or books may be removed or copied.

Because no food service is available at the site, participants can bring snacks, lunch, or beverages into the testing room.

Pass/Fail for all exams is 80 percent. The city will contact Participants will be contacted by the city within one week following the exam. Participants with a passing score can apply for a City of Ottawa Electrical license specific to their exam category. There is a $150 fee for electrical licensees. The licensee must provide proof of current General Liability Insurance coverage with the City of Ottawa listed as the Certificate Holder for a calendar year license.

Any candidate with a testing score of less than 80 percent has to wait 90 days before re-testing with Ottawa. Any questions regarding the exam can be emailed to electrical@cityofottawa.org.

What do licensed electricians do?

Electricians have usually completed an electrician program at a trade school or technical institute, finished a lengthy apprenticeship, and passed a licensing exam.

Electrical responsibilities include installing, maintaining, and enhancing electrical systems for fuses, lighting, and wiring; inspecting, testing, and diagnosing; completing required repair and service documentation; troubleshooting problems and making repairs.

According to salary.com, in September 2023, the average electrician’s salary in Illinois was $56,878, but the range typically falls between $49,398 and $65,758. Salary ranges can vary widely depending on the city and other important factors, including additional skills, certifications, education, and the years spent in the profession.
