The LaSalle County Coroner Saturday confirmed the identity of the two drivers fatally injured in Wednesday morning’s apparent head-on collision on Illinois 23 near the Leonore Blacktop. Funeral service information for the two victims was published by mortuaries on Friday after forensic autopsies that were conducted late on Wednesday. 19-year-old Anna Michelle Martin of Streator has a funeral service today. 40-year-old David Strack of Leonore has a funeral service tomorrow. The accident is still under investigation by the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police.

On Saturday, about 400 people attended the Out of the Darkness Walk Suicide Prevention Walk. The event supported the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Along with the Ottawa Police Office Tyler Brewer and K-9 Therapy Dog, Rookie, community support organizations had displays and booths including Perfectly Flawless, the La Salle County Veterans Assistance Commission, and Community Food Basket of Ottawa. The support organizations were there to help make the public aware of how to get help for depression and anxiety that so often leads to suicide.

Utica’s Village President David Stewart has postponed a late October open house for the public to see the designs for ‘The Shoppes at Mill Street Market. Stewart is anticipating an early November event so the public can see more specific and detailed plans. Development won’t begin until spring 2024. Twelve 12×12-foot portable retail stalls with a four-foot porch will located in the area directly north of the 2004 Tornado Memorial at the northwest edge of the downtown area where a parking lot exists. Retailers would lease the stalls from May to December. If the shops become a popular attraction, there is room to add additional stalls.

An Ottawa woman is the new Executive Director of the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation. Tracy Beattie succeeds Fran Brolley who is now the Executive Director of the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation. Beattie has been with the Starved Rock Regional Center in Ottawa for nine years. She is a graduate of Ottawa High School and Eastern Illinois University. Beattie says one of her goals here is to increase alumni engagement and donations, and potentially to develop a successful capital campaign to promote a special need or project.

President Biden is speaking out after a six-year-old boy was killed in an anti-Muslim attack in Plainfield Township. Authorities say Joseph Czuba stabbed Wadea Al-Fayoume to death and wounded his mother over the weekend in their home for being Muslim. The president released a statement saying he was shocked and sickened to learn of the deadly attack. He said this horrific act of hate has no place in America, adding that Americans must come together and reject Islamophobia and all forms of bigotry and hatred.

Illinois officials are monitoring the conflict in the Middle East and potential threats in the states. Governor Pritzker has been briefed by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Office of Homeland Security and the Illinois State Police. He has instructed both to work closely with law enforcement partners and to be on heightened alert for any threats related to places of worship across the state. So far, there have been no credible threats in Illinois.

Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan are being awarded one billion dollars in federal funding for the Midwest Hydrogen Hub. The Midwest Hydrogen Hub is a multi-state, multi-sector network that enables de-carbonization through strategic hydrogen use. It aims to reduce carbon emissions by almost four million metric tons per year. The network will leverage all three state’s assets to expand the reach of the local hydrogen economy and advance the development of the hydrogen production industry across the Midwest.

The Mendota Police Department responded to an emergency call Friday night shortly before 8 from 100 South 1st Avenue, Lot 9. After an investigation, 25-year-old Alexis A. Adams was arrested for domestic battery. Adams was taken to the LaSalle County Jail to await a bond hearing.

Saturday night shortly after 8, La Salle County Deputies conducted a traffic stop near Illinois 251 and North 34th Round in Dimmick Township. 20-year-old Yasmina Londgra of Dalzell was arrested for driving without a license and released with a notice to appear in court.

A 41-year-old Chatham man is charged with driving with a suspended registration after a traffic stop by LaSalle County Deputies Saturday night at about 11:00 near Illinois 178 and U.S. 6 in Utica Township. Mark Mason was released with a notice to appear in court.

29-year-old Jessica Holts of Earlville was clocked by LaSalle County Deputies speeding 76 miles an hour in a 55-zone Sunday evening. Holts was stopped near Illinois 23 and North 33rd Road in Dayton Township.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is charging the Boone County clerk and recorder. An indictment accuses Julie Bliss of stealing money from the county and using a Boone County credit card to pay for personal expenses while serving as county clerk and recorder. The Illinois State Police led the investigation into Bliss’ misconduct. She has been placed on administrative leave.

Ottawa sending multiple players to state: At Peru, weather wreaked havoc on the schedule at the Class 1A La Salle-Peru Sectional on Friday and Saturday. Ottawa and Morris both had three entrants reach the semifinals to qualify for state. Ottawa and Morris also were locked in a tight battle for the sectional title, with Morris having the upper hand with a four-point lead entering the semifinal round.

Both of the Pirates’ doubles teams qualified for state.

>>Bears Lose Fields In Loss To Vikings

(Chicago, IL) — The Bears lost in more ways than one yesterday. Starting quarterback Justin Fields was injured during the third quarter of Chicago’s 19-13 loss against the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field. Fields dislocated his thumb and did not return to the contest. He finished the day with just 58 yards and an interception. Tyson Bagent replaced Fields and promptly fumbled, leading to a Vikings touchdown. Bagent scored a rushing touchdown in the fourth to bring Chicago within one possession, but he threw an interception on the Bear’s final possession. The Bears fell to 1-and-5 with the loss, and they host Las Vegas next Sunday.

>>Blackhawks Come Up Short Against Canadiens

(Montreal, QC) — The Blackhawks weren’t able to overcome three second-period goals during a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Saturday. Montreal took a 3-0 lead heading into the third period, but Chicago got on the board when Tyler Johnson scored in the first minute of the final frame. Johnson added another goal with just under 90 seconds left in regulation, but Chicago wasn’t able to hit the equalizer. The Hawks are 1-2-and-0, and they visit the Maple Leafs tonight.

>>Bulls Fall To Nuggets In Preseason

(Denver, CO) — The Bulls trailed for the final three quarters during a 116-102 preseason loss to the Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena. The Bulls were down by as many as 18 points during the losing effort. Coby White and Patrick Williams both scored 20 points to lead Chicago. The Bulls are 0-and-2 in exhibition play, and they host the Raptors tomorrow.

>>Notre Dame Crushes USC

(South Bend, IN) — Number-18 Notre Dame seemed to have Caleb Williams figured out during a 48-20 rout over number-16 USC at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday. The Fighting Irish picked off three passes in the first half and took a 24-6 lead to halftime. Notre Dame kept the Trojans at an arm’s length throughout the second half by answering every USC touchdown with a score of their own. The Irish had five takeaways in the victory. Sam Hartman passed for 126 yards and two touchdowns, while Audric Estime added 95 yards and two scores on the ground. The 6-and-2 Irish are off this weekend. They take on Pittsburgh on October 28th.

>>Illinois Walks-Off Maryland

(College Park, MD) — The Illinois Fighting Illini hit a last-second field goal to beat the Maryland Terrapins 27-24 at SECU Stadium on Saturday. Illinois led by ten in the third quarter, but Maryland fought back to tie the game with 91 seconds left in regulation. However, the Illini moved the ball 50 yards on their final possession, and Caleb Griffin knocked in a 43-yard field goal as time expired. Luke Altmyer had 206 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the victory. Illinois improved to 3-and-4 overall and 1-and-3 in the Big Ten. The Illini host Wisconsin this Saturday.

In other college football action over the weekend, Illinois State crushed Indiana State 44-7, Northern Illinois beat Ohio 23-13, and Northwestern was on its bye week.
