A historical marker to remember the Manitowoc Ship Building Company is being placed in Morris. U.S.S. Chicago Base Commander John Connon with the U.S. Submarine Veterans says 28 of the submarines built there in World War II went down the Illinois River. Then they went down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico and eventually found their way to the Pacific Ocean. Four were lost in battle.

Connon says the memorial will be dedicated at 11am on Saturday, September 19.

The memorial is by the Illinois and Michigan Canal southwest of the downtown Morris Grundy County courthouse.
