More than 700 scouts pitched their tents for a Fall Camporee in Ottawa to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the W. D. Boyce Council, in honor of Boy Scouts of America founder W. D. Boyce. BSA troops and Venturing crews from three Scout Councils in Central Illinois set up camps on Ottawa’s riverfront as well as in Rigden and Fox River parks. Activities were held in the Jordan Block and Washington Square Park in the downtown area.

As preparation for the March 19th, 2024 Primary Election begins, the State Board of Elections will hold a joint press conference with local election officials on Tuesday in the LaSalle County Board Room. Local election leaders will discuss election misinformation and inquiries into their election processes and procedures since the 2016 Presidential Election. Highlighted will be how local election management secures the integrity of elections in Illinois while sharing best practices and policies.

Two Ottawa men are charged with burglary of a motor vehicle and criminal damage to property after an investigation into an eyewitness report of an in-progress burglary to a motor vehicle near Clinton Street and Woodward Memorial Drive. 20-year-old Michael A. Boaz and 20-year-old Fernando J. Martinez were released with a notice to appear.

University of Illinois police are using drones for campus security. The Division of Public Safety launched the drones to get a bird’s eye view. The use of drones by law enforcement is limited to specific purposes, including special events, missing person searches, crime scenes, or traffic crash photography. For the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, drones will be used primarily for football games and other large events throughout the year.

Two California men are facing charges following a massive drug bust in Illinois. State police say a trooper pulled over a Provost Bus on I-80 last Wednesday in Henry County. Authorities searched the vehicle and seized more than five thousand pounds of cannabis. The seizure is one of the largest in ISP history and has an estimated value of more than six million dollars. Both Robert Mazo and Pedro Arreola were transported to the Henry County Jail.

Early Sunday morning, Mendota Police charged a 28-year-old Paw Paw man with driving under the influence after a two-car crash at Jefferson Street and 13th Avenue. Justin G. Wiley was released with a notice to appear in court.

A 28-year-old Streator man has a court date after a traffic stop by Streator Police in the 800 block of East Main Street early Saturday. Juan Everardo was charged with driving under the influence and released with a court date.

Mendota Police charged 33-year-old Michael B. Henderson of Mendota with driving under the influence after a traffic stop in the 800 block of 2nd Avenue at 2:00 a.m. Sunday. Henderson was given a court date.

OBITUARIES:

Vivian Maierhofer, 94, of Seneca, passed away Tuesday, September 19th.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, with burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Christopher George Falaney, age 55, of Ottawa, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, September 20th, in Normal.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30th, at Gladfelter-Roetker Funeral Home.

(Boston, MA) — The White Sox claimed the rubber match in their series finale against the Red Sox after earning a 3-2 victory in the six-inning, rain-shortened finale from Fenway Park. Mike Clevinger went the distance for his ninth win of the year after allowing two runs on five hits over six innings pitched. Elvis Andrus led the way at the plate after going one for three with a two-run double. Chicago is fourth in the AL Central at 60-and-96. The Southsiders host Arizona tomorrow night.

(Kansas City, MO) — The Bears remain winless following a 41-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead. The Bears gave up 27 points in the second quarter and trailed 34-0 at the half. Chicago had just 203 yards of total offense, and Justin Fields had another bad game, throwing for just 99 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The Bears are in last place in the NFC North with a 0-and-3 record. They host the Broncos on Sunday.

(Chicago, IL) — Patrick Wisdom mashed a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning as the Cubs beat the Rockies 4-3 at Wrigley Field. Wisdom hit his 22nd homer of the season with a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth. Yan Gomes also plated two runs to help Chicago sweep the three-game series. Jordan Wicks earned the win on the mound, while Julian Merryweather locked down his second save. The Cubs improved to 82-and-74 and are one game ahead of the Miami Marlins for the third NL Wild Card spot. Chicago visits Atlanta tomorrow.

>>Notre Dame Loses In Final Seconds

(South Bend, IN) — The number-13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost in heartbreaking fashion 17-14 against number-three Ohio State at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday. The Irish overcame a ten-point deficit after Sam Hartman threw a touchdown pass to Rico Flores Jr. that gave Notre Dame a 14-10 lead with under eight-and-a-half minutes left in regulation. However, the Buckeyes went down the field on their final drive and scored a game-winning rushing touchdown with one second left on the clock. To make matters worse, Notre Dame had just ten men on the field defensively for the final two plays of the possession. The Irish fell to 4-and-1, and they visit number-16 Duke this Saturday.

(Champaign, IL) — The Illinois Fighting Illini snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Florida Atlantic 23-17 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. FAU got within six with four minutes left in regulation, but the Illini were able to run out the clock on the next possession. Luke Altmyer threw for 303 yards and a touchdown, and he added a score on the ground as well. Illinois is 2-and-2 overall and 0-and-1 in Big Ten play. The Illini take on Purdue this Saturday.

>>Northwestern Comes Back To Beat Minnesota

(Evanston, IL) — The Northwestern Wildcats overcame a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Minnesota Gophers in overtime 37-34 at Ryan Field on Saturday. Northwestern was down 31-10 before scoring three touchdowns in the final 12 minutes of regulation. Ben Bryant threw the game-tying touchdown to AJ Henning with just two seconds left on the clock. After Minnesota kicked a field goal in OT, Bryant hit Charlie Mangieri for a 25-yard walk-off score. Bryant passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns, The Wildcats improved to 2-and-2 overall and 1-and-1 in the Big Ten. Northwestern hosts number-seven Penn State this Saturday.
